Bad Painting 2.0

Bad Painting 2.0

Is it necessary to develop strategies in order to paint today? The site of contemporary painting is not anymore purely optical or material, but communicational, extending through various forms of networks. In this context, contemporary painting could be seens as more than ever a surrogate of itself, lending its picture frame to all kinds of images that would populate its field. If painting happens outside of itself, how can painters today reclaim a place for subjectivation and agency?

Friart Kunsthalle Fribourg gathers 4 artists of La Réforme de Pooky: Elise Corpataux, Gritli Faulhaber, Jasmine Gregory and Sophie Reinhold to discuss those questions in light of their practices and contributions to the exhibition. The talk will focus on their gestures of exaggeration, of appropriation of specific imagery, of production of postcards paintings, of femininity in painting, of framing a particular landscape (material, geographical or discursive) and more generally a common dose of tolerance for a past legacy that generates possible answers to those painterly conundrums and, potentially, to the “strategy” question. The round table will be moderated by Paolo Baggi (co-curator of the exhibition).
