Live-Performance
bela
We are pleased to present a performance by bela at the Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg, developed in collaboration with Mira M. Yang. bela will conceive a site-specific live performance that uses and plays the instruments and sound-producing objects in the exhibition Ensemble as a setup, allowing a haunting space of feedback, reverberation, and echo to emerge.
bela (they/them) is a South Korean musician and performance artist based between Berlin and Prague. bela uses guttural vocals and feedback to build acoustic textures and resonances. Their work often adopts an autobiographical voice which draws from lived experiences, lineage, and transcendence. Their music and performances give way to a renewal or expansion of location vis-a-vis sounds and bodies within social and celestial spheres. Korean Sonnets, their most recent album and performance, is devoted to an experimentation with the acoustics of the guttural voice in relation to other bodies and spaces. Here, bela discovers romance in its most tactile form, while leaning into creaks, feedback, and resonance to create a sombre yet intimate hour– an hour suspended by inhuman notes above the material plane. Bela is currently a resident at La Becque Residence d’Artistes.
