3:30pm
Performance Freiburg – Fribourg
Lecture by Esther Maria Jungo followed by the book launch of Revolving Histories
Based on her research into the history of performative practices in Fribourg, art historian Esther Maria Jungo traces in her lecture the closely intertwined institutional histories of Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg (founded in 1981) and the multidisciplinary festival Belluard Bollwerk (founded in 1983). Together with the music club Fri-Son, both institutions are rooted in an experimental artistic approach that brought together visual art, performance, theatre, and music, and made a significant contribution to an expanded understanding of contemporary artistic practice in Switzerland.
Jungo’s contribution is part of the research project Revolving Histories, which is dedicated to documenting and making visible translocal performance histories in Switzerland since the 1960s. It is based on oral history sources and presents them for the first time in a cross-disciplinary publication. Following Jungo’s lecture, the book launch of Atlas Revolving Histories – On Translocal Performance Art in Switzerland (Vexer Verlag, 2026) will take place.
