Fri-Art, Fribourg’s contemporary art centre, aims to intensify its cultural contacts; Double Consciousness will examine new perspectives in relations, opening up our awareness to surpass the dualist perception dictated by Western society, and gain recognition of oneself and of the other. Double Consciousness breaks down traditional categories of perception, by delving into a storehouse of experiences that one shares with the world, or perhaps with other disciplines (e.g. the sciences and the arts). Thus, this exhibition proposes to investigate the subject of consciousness (from the Latin cum scientiae, meaning “accompanied by knowledge”), notably by means of the phenomenon of twinship. Twin artists and curators examine not just the similarities they share, but also certain complementary aspects of relationships revolving around differences. For twins, a dual consciousness arising from recognition of oneself and of the other is linked to an ambiguous presence that makes one differentiate oneself from the other by highlighting distance, separation and mediation in a spellbound mood.
